(30/5/1932 – 11/7/1990)
58 years of age
A qualified lawyer and religious teacher, Ustaz Muhammad Kamil was born in Singapore on Monday, 30 May 1932 (24 Muharram 1351). After graduating from Al-Azhar University in Islamic Jurisprudence and Civil Law, he pursued his studies and obtained his Barrister of Law from Cambridge University.
In London, he taught for some time at the Berlitz School of Languages. Beside practicing law full-time, he set aside some of his time to teach at Madrasah Al-Maarif Al-Islamiah. He was also an active member of the Madrasah’s school committee and once held the position of Principal of that Madrasah. His most lasting contribution to the Madrasah was his effort to revamp its curriculum by introducing Mathematics, Science and English subjects and making it compulsory for its students to take GCE ‘O’ Level beginning from 1971. Due to this effort, Madrasah al-Ma’arif was the first madrasah in Singapore to have a Science laboratory. Financially, he contributed to the Madrasah fund by channelling to it some of his income from the classes he taught.
He died on Wednesday, 11 July 1990 (17 Zulhijjah 1410) at the age of 58. He did not leave behind any children.
May Allah bless his soul.
