Osman bin Jantan

(26/11/1937 - 07/06/2011) 74 years of age Ustaz Haji Osman bin Jantan was born in Malacca on 26th of November 1937. He received his early education at Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah. From 1965 to 1971 he studied at Maktab Perguruan Singapura. He later pursued his study at Univisitas Nasional Jakarta from 1976 to 1979. Ustaz Haji Osman was very active in dakwah scene in Singapore. He contributed a lot in all three major local Islamic organisations: Muis, Pergas and Jamiyah. He sat in Muis Council for three terms from 1968-1980. He was responsible for the production and edition of the first periodical published by Muis, Fajar. He was also instrumental in designing the Islamic Religious Knowledge module taught in secondary schools in Singapore in the 1980s. As a teacher, he taught Malay Language at several secondary schools including Swiss Cottage Secondary, Pasir Panjang Secondary and Yusof Ishak Secondary. From 1980 to 1983 he worked as religious officer at Jamiyah. He was also Pergas' secretary and was elected as its vice president in 1968. Ustaz Haji Osman was a prolific writer, producing many books. He was working on his autobiography when death invited him. The draft of that book was left in his computer. He was also known as mutawwif, bringing pilgrims for haj and umrah.
